From June 10th, the new .uk domain will be available to register, offering another piece of digital space to build your business on with a clear connection to the UK.
One of the benefits of investing in the new, shorter URL is that the visitor’s attention is shifted away from all the w’s and dots and focuses instead on the website name and identity. In addition to this, businesses trading with UK in their domain are more inclined to see higher conversion rates than those using a .com domain, as UK consumers feel more comfortable purchasing from a merchant based in the UK, as opposed to abroad.
All existing domains with a UK suffix will continue to run as normal and for those of you that already own a .co.uk domain, the equivalent .uk domain is automatically reserved for you ahead of this launch. The automatic right to .uk domain will expire on 10th June 2019 and after this date the .uk will become available for anyone to register.
If you’re an owner of a .co.uk domain and want to check if you own the rights to the equivalent .uk domain, or if you’re interested in registering a completely new domain, then Nominet have a useful rights look-up tool online where you can check for domain availability and rights information.
