Mac Mail 4.5: Setting up your e-mail account

Please note that the following guide is to show you how to setup an e-mail account on Mail 4.5 on your Mac computer, using Mac OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). The account configuration on more recent versions of Mac OS X, and Mail may differ to this guide.

1) Start up your Mail app.

2) Click “File” in the menu bar, and then click “Add Account…”

3) Type in your basic details, so the name you want to show up on your e-mails, and the e-mail address and password provided to you.

Mail will search for the servers to try and automatically connect to them, however, it most likely won’t find anything. So you’re going to have to manually configure the account yourself.

4) Now it will ask for your incoming mail server details. Make sure “POP” is selected for the account type, and your Incoming Mail Server is your domain preceded by “mail.” – so, for example, if your domain was “bobsmith.com”, your mail server would be “mail.bobsmith.com”.

The Description field is just what you want your inbox to be called.

5) If your incoming mail server settings are correct, it will now ask for your outgoing mail server. These details are the same as your incoming server details. Make sure that “Use Authentication” is checked, and that your e-mail address and password are in the User Name and Password fields.

6) If all of your details are correct, your new e-mail account is configured and ready to go! Just make sure that your details are correct, and there’s nothing missing.

If you don’t want to take the account online just yet, and have it waiting in the background, then un-check “Take account online”, and click “Create”.
