Setting up on Windows 98



To Create a connection in Windows 98, follow the instructions below:

  1. From your desktop, double-click My Computer.

  2. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking folder.

  3. Double-click Make New Connection.

  4. Enter a name for the connection (for example: Shellnet).

  5. Select your modem in the drop down menu.

  6. Click Next.

  7. Enter the Shellnet access number.

  8. Click Next, and then Finish.

  9. Right click on the new Shellnet Icon and choose Properties.

  10. Click the Server Type button.

  11. Make sure the Type of Server reads PPP: Windows 95/98, Windows NT 3.5, Internet.

  12. In the Advanced Options section, uncheck Log on to network, leaving only Enable Software compression checked.

    Note: In the future, if you are having problems connecting or it is taking a long time to connect, try unchecking Enable software compression.

  13. In the Allowed network protocols section, uncheck NetBEUI and IPX/SPX Compatible, leaving only TCP/IP checked.

    NOTE:: Selecting other protocols may reduce the speed of your connection or make a connection impossible. If you are on a local area network (LAN), please consult with your network administrator.

  1. From your desktop, double-click My Computer. You should see icons for the drives on your system, Control Panel, and, if it's installed, Dial-Up Networking.

  2. Double-click Control Panel.

  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

  4. Click the Windows Setup tab.

  5. Place a check in the Communications component.

  6. Click OK.

    Windows 95/98 will now begin copying files from your Windows95/98 CD-ROM. Insert your CD-ROM when prompted to do so.
  7. When Add/Remove Programs is finished copying files, you should see the Control Panel.

    Now you should restart your computer:

    Click your Start button and click Shut Down.

    Select Restart the computer and click Yes.

  8. When your computer restarts, you may be asked to enter your username and password for Windows Networking:

    For username, enter your first name.

    Leave the password field blank and click OK.

  9. The next window asks you to verify your password. Leave everything blank and click OK.

    Now when you restart Windows95/98 you will not be asked to enter a username and password ever again. You will also notice a new icon on your desktop: 'Network Neighborhood'. Don't worry, this is just part of the networking component in Windows95/98.
